"Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest,
So is my beloved among the young men.
In his shade I took great delight and sat down,
And his fruit was sweet to my taste.
He has brought me to his banquet hall,
And his banner over me is love.
Refresh me with raisin cakes,
Sustain me with apples,
Because I am lovesick.
His left hand is under my head,
And his right hand embraces me.”
Song of Solomon 2:3-6
There is some debate about the symbolism of raisin cakes in the bible. At one point the Lord speaks to Hosea that the Israelites "look to other gods and love the raisin cakes of the pagans." Evidently the pagans were using cakes of raisins as offerings to false gods. YUCK. However, in the scripture above from Song of Solomon, we see a lovesick bride, longing to be in the arms of her bridegroom again. What does she ask for? Refreshment with raisin cakes.
Spiritually speaking I believe this is like saying, "Revive my soul as I wait for you to return Jesus! Fill me up with Your sweet blessings to sustain my faith in your soon return!' Receiving from heaven is like being in His embrace and truly refreshes and sustains us as we wait to be brought completely, body, soul and spirit, into His chamber for the consummation of our faith when we are whisked away to our wedding at the rapture. Furthermore, King David gave raisin cakes to every Israelite as part of the celebration feast when the Ark was returned so it seems that although the pagans also liked raisin cakes, there is nothing inherently evil about them, so eat them I will! Here is my 15 minute version...
"When David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD. Then he distributed to every man and woman of Israel a loaf of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake. David appointed some of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, to celebrate, to give thanks, and to praise the LORD, the God of Israel." 1 Chronicles 16:2-3 (Also found in 2 Samuel 6)
